Why does my dog eat birds?

My dog is a welsh terrier mix, we have 6 baby quails and i brought 1 near him to see what he will do and he licked it and kept sniffing and he almost tried to eat but i got it away from him... Why does he do this? He's 6 years old and he has food and he often gets ham and meat..
