I ordered at bone steak in the south.?

Ok so I ordered a tbone steak when I was down south and the waitress this black girl asked how old I was then she mentioned that she didn't have her first steak until she was 24. Do people down south eat steak or is it some kind of weird meat to them? That was weird it make me wonder if it really was steak she gave me since she asked me that and mentioned what she had mentioned. It was down south so it made me wonder if southern people don't make steak out of beef. I heard of people in the south eat weird stuff like possum, racoon, alligator, quail, buffalo, bulls, cats and anything besides chicken cow and pork and lamb. So do you think theres a possibility that the steak I ate was not beef or was it that shes just poor and can't afford to order, eat or buy steak?
